Seven Stray Dogs Killed In Njarakkal

KOCHI: Seven stray dogs were killed in Njarakkal panchayat on Tuesday. The dogs were killed by people with the support of panchayat member Mini Raju. Mini, Kolencherry ward member, said, “We have been facing stray dog menace. We killed stray dogs which were found attempting to attack children”. She refused to further speak on the killing of dogs.

Chairman of Janaseva Sisubhavan Jose Maveli who was also present while people killing the dogs said, “It was DYFI members in the area who killed the dogs. We extended support to them. The killed dogs were buried in an unutilised place in the panchayat limit”.

Mass petition against stray dogs

As per a press release issued by Maveli, they have arranged a programme in Njarakkal on Tuesday to collect signatures of people for preparing a mass petition against stray dogs. Meanwhile, police said they have not received complaint from anybody regarding the culling of dogs.

Culling of stray dogs in Njarakkal

Sally Kannan, an animal activist and founder of Save a Life, has said, “Jose Maveli is openly admitting that they have killed dogs. The culling of dogs in Njarakkal shows that people taking law at their hands. The culling of stray dogs will only lead to multiplying the number of them after a while. Culling has tried in many places and failed poorly. The only solution is Animal Birth Control programme”.

She said a case against Jose Maveli will be filed with the police under various sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 and IPC.
